Sexual relationship

The intercourse (from Latin: co-iter , ‘common march’ or ‘go together’). It is the intercourse or sexual union between two individuals. In human beings, intercourse is part of the sexual relationship, may or may not have as its objective the fertilization of the female gamete, and involves the participation of the external or internal genital organs. It occurs in mammals (including humans), reptiles and insects. It is part of the mating ritual, and it is the moment in which the male and female of a species mate, that is, when the male’s phallus is introduced into the female’s vagina and can deposit the male gametes that fertilize there to the female gamete.

Intercourse in humans

Vaginal intercourse

Vaginal intercourse consists of the penetration of the erect penis into the vagina. Although there is a tendency to think that the original form of vaginal intercourse in humans is called tergo or ventro-dorsal — since it exists in other mammals in an almost exclusive way — there are studies that question this theory and find a relationship between morphological constraints and the preference for ventro-ventral intercourse in man and the bonobo chimpanzee.

The tergo sexual position —that is, the penetration of the penis into the vagina when the female is with her back to the male— is usually called levrette, if the woman is leaning on her legs and arms, although it is also performed when the woman is vaginally penetrated from the back (for example, lying down with her back on the male).

The most common form of intercourse in humans is the ventro-ventral or frontal, colloquially called the missionary position, since the introduction of this form of intercourse in Oceania is popularly attributed to missionaries.

Another common position during intercourse in humans is the Andromache position, with the woman sitting on the man lying down. This pose gives more possibility of movements to both the woman and the man, since both can use their hands to caress other parts of the body.

Coitus interruptus

It is called coitus interruptus or interrupted intercourse when ejaculation occurs outside the vagina at the end of intercourse.

This practice of pulling the penis out of the vagina just before ejaculation was considered a natural contraceptive method for a long time, but it is not a safe way to avoid pregnancy, as precum – the discharge prior to ejaculation – also contains sperm. It does not protect partners from STIs (such as AIDS or syphilis).

Anal sex

In anal sex, penetration takes place in the partner’s anus. In academic language the term “pedication” is also sometimes used (from the Latin pœdicatio or pœdicationis).

The person who is penetrated can exert force with the muscles of the anal sphincter, squeezing the penis and increasing the pleasure sensation. The ejaculated semen remains deposited in the rectum until the excrement follows its natural course to the outside.

The anal mucosa lacks lubrication and is even easier to irritate than the vagina, which is why, since the detection of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, the use of condoms has been promoted among people who have sex to avoid possible contagion.

Sexual controversies

Sexual relations have always been a controversial issue throughout the history of all civilizations [citation needed], especially in the Judeo-Christian culture. Religions have had an important influence on the concept of sexuality. In general terms, it is known that having sex contributes to relaxation. Within Western culture, certain acts such as pedophilia are illegal (they confuse it in the media, but it must be distinguished from pedophilia, which is nothing more than the sexual attraction that an adult feels towards children or adolescents), incest , or rape. Pedophilia and rape are crimes in almost every country in the world.

Sexual activities such as adultery, orgies, and premarital relationships may be rejected or accepted by certain groups of people, although they are unsanctioned practices in much of the West and elsewhere, while there is a punitive trend in fundamentalist and theocratic societies.
