Historical review
The Blood Bank was inaugurated on January 8 , 1991 by necessity and strategy of the municipality. The building occupies an area of 745 m² and a total area of 2440 m² (61 x 40). It is technically equipped for the extraction of 50 liters per day. The cost of construction and assembly amounted to 1.5 million pesos and the equipment to 1 million pesos, for a total of approximately 2.5 million. It has a functional distribution in its three floors. It has a waiting room for donors, and other facilities for the collection of blood and plasma by automated apheresis. Mobile units bring services closer to the donor, through visits to the different municipalities of the province. The area for the processing of blood or preparation of blood components and / or serum has the necessary equipment to carry out its productions with great efficiency and quality. It also has a Clinical Laboratory and Quality Control, which comply with the regulations established by MINSAP and make it possible for our products to have great safety. For the automation of the donor registry and all the information that is processed in the different departments, the Galen Lab Blood Bank System produced by Softel has been implemented.

Governing center of the Blood and Blood Products Program in the province, in charge of providing efficient services related to the extraction and processing of blood to obtain its different components in order to maintain a stable supply with a high level of quality to our clients, helping to save lives.

Corporate Purpose of the Center
- Provide Specialized Services in blood extraction, production of blood products to guarantee the Medical Assistance of the health units and the Medical Pharmaceutical Industry (PPF, Bufy-COAT, Specific Plasma, platelets)
- Direct, guide, methodologically control the Blood Program in the Province.
- Project, direct and execute research and treatment works in these specialties.
- Carry out scientific meetings and activities with medical personnel and other workers.
Organizational structure and operation
The province of Las Tunas has a Provincial Blood Bank and three municipal Banks, which respond to the Provincial Bank, located in the municipalities of Puerto Padre , Jobabo and Amancio Rodríguez . These facilities have all the necessary equipment to carry out all the extraction, processing and storage processes that are carried out in units of this type. The Provincial Blood Bank is in charge of collecting donations from the Manatí , Majibacoa and Las Tunas municipalities . The one in the Puerto Padre municipality collects the donations from Puerto Padre and Menéndez , in the case of Jobabo it assumes those of Jobabo and Colombia; and Amancio Rodríguez to his municipality, the latter is located 102 km from the Provincial Hospitals.
Basic functions
Donations area
- Extract and preserve the blood product of donations, guaranteeing its perfect condition until its transfer to production.
- Ensure that 100% of the donors are selected according to the selection criteria in force, by or under the supervision of a doctor or a graduate in Nursing.
- Ensure that the provisional storage and transport of blood, plasma and other components are carried out according to current procedures.
Production area
- Produce blood components, immunogens and raw materials for the blood products industry.
- Ensure that initial materials, packaging, intermediate and final products are stored and preserved according to instructions.
- Ensure that the release or authorization of delivery of the final products is carried out according to the current instructions.
- Ensure that manufacturing records and protocols related to the collection and release of blood or its components are reviewed and signed.
Laboratory area
- Certify 100% of blood and plasma donations made in the province, in any agency.
- Ensure that the work of the area is properly applied techniques, analytical methods and procedures in a way that ensures the quality and integrity and reliability of the results.
- Guarantee the delivery of information with the frequency and quality required.
Extraction Centers
The Provincial Blood Bank has four extraction centers located in the Polyclinics of the Las Tunas municipality.

These Extraction Centers (CE) are attended by Blood Bank staff on a fixed day a week, only carrying out the blood selection and extraction processes and traveling through the mobile units of the Center. The Provincial Bank owns a Yutong-brand bus where blood extractions are carried out in the municipalities of Manatí, Colombia, Jobabo and Majibacoa.
Transfusion Services
The province has 6 transfusion services distributed as follows:
- Las Tunas: 2 Located in the Ernesto Guevara and Mártires de Las Tunas Provincial Hospitals (Pediatric).
- Puerto Padre: 2 Guillermo Domínguez General Hospital and Pediatric Hospital
- Jobabo: 1 Polyclinic with Hospitalization Service
- Amancio Rodríguez: 1 Polyclinic with Hospitalization Service
It should be noted that transfusion and blood bank services coexist under the same directive.
Plasmaphérisis
The Province has two Plasmapheresis Units located in the municipalities of Puerto Padre in the Municipal Bank and Las Tunas in the Provincial Bank. The delivery of plasma to the industry has been fulfilled in a stable way as of the year 2012 . Las Tunas ranks eighth among delivery plans nationwide.
