Pharmacology
Bacitracin is a polypeptide antibiotic, generally bactericidal against gram-positive and some gram-negative microorganisms. It acts within the bacterial cell membrane and interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding and inhibiting the dephosphorylation of a membrane-bound lipid pyrophosphate. The pyrophosphate is the precursor of a carrier molecule one decaprenyl phosphate which participates in the polymerization of the peptidoglycan.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Bacitracin is not significantly absorbed.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to the drug.
Precautions
It is recommended to use it with caution during pregnancy and lactation, assessing the risk-benefit ratio. The clinical benefit of treatment to the patient should be weighed against any possible unknown risk to the developing fetus.
Warnings
Delicate use product that must be administered under medical supervision. Eye ointments can cause blurred vision for a few minutes after they are applied. In each application take care not to make contact with the tip of the tube. Cap the tube after application. Discontinue use of the medicine and consult a doctor if signs of irritation appear, if you do not see signs of improvement or if you notice a worsening of your condition in the first 72 hours of treatment. Prolonged use of the drug can lead to infections by other microorganisms not susceptible to it, in which case the treatment should be discontinued and appropriate measures taken according to medical prescription.
Adverse reactions
It can cause irritation phenomena: eyelid edema, conjunctival hyperemia, chemosis and blurred vision. Allergic disorders have occurred with local use. Long-term use of topical antibiotics can lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, such as fungi. Ophthalmic ointments can delay corneal wound healing.
Posology
Apply to the conjunctival sac 2-4 times a day. In blepharitis, all scales and crusts must be removed before application. Overdose: Overdose or accidental ingestion do not cause major problems than the aforementioned side effects. Discontinue treatment in case of severe eye reactions.
