Causes

Exposure to dusts, fumes, strong acids, and other chemicals in the air cause this type of bronchitis . Cigarette smoking can also contribute. Employers are required to have copies of Material Safety Data Sheets available in the workplace.

The worker may be at risk if exposed to dusts that contain:

  • Asbestos
  • Coal
  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Latex
  • Metals
  • Silica
  • talcum powder
  • Toluene diisocyanate
  • Western red cedar

Symptoms

  • Cough that produces mucus (sputum)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing

Tests and exams

The doctor will listen to the lungs using a stethoscope. Rales or hissing noises may be heard. The exams cover:

  • CT scan of the chest
  • Chest x-ray
  • Lung function tests

Treatment

The purpose of treatment is to reduce irritation. Getting more air in the workplace or wearing masks to filter out harmful air particles can help. Some people may need to be removed from the workplace.

Some cases of industrial bronchitis go away without treatment; other times, the person may need inhalation of anti-inflammatory medications. If the patient is at risk or has experienced this problem and is a smoker, they should stop smoking.

Useful measures include:

  • Breathing humidified air
  • Increase in fluid intake
  • Repose

Forecast

The prognosis may be good to the extent that the patient can suspend exposure to the irritant. Chronic disability from industrial bronchitis is rare.

Possible complications

Continued exposure to gases, fumes, and other irritants can lead to permanent lung damage.

When to contact a medical professional

Consult a doctor if you are regularly exposed to dusts, fumes, strong acids or other chemicals that can affect the lungs and if you have symptoms of bronchitis .

Prevention

Control dust in industrial facilities through the use of face masks, protective clothing and textile treatment. Stop smoking if you are at risk. Undergo an early detection test by a doctor if the patient is exposed to chemicals that can cause this condition.
