Benzofen

A drug used to treat epilepsy and seizures .

Composition

Each tablet contains: N-benzoylphenobarbital 100mg.

Action

Antiepileptic, anticonvulsant, with a greater therapeutic spectrum, better tolerance and lower incidence of toxic effects than that of Phenobarbital .

Indication

Alone or in conjunction with other anticonvulsant agents ( Phenobarbital , Diphenylhydantoin , Trimetadone ) in the treatment of various types of epilepsies , including great evil, oral or Jacksonian seizures.

Benzophen, like Phenobarbital, is a good starter drug, having the advantage over it that its hypnotic effect is much less. Its low toxicity also makes it preferable to Hydantoins . It is less effective in the little evil and in psychomotor epilepsy.

Adverse reactions

In therapeutic doses, the drug is practically non-toxic, however, it can produce in sensitive subjects, symptoms similar to those of Phenobarbital , such as drowsiness, indisposition, signs of Ataxia , nystagmus and language disorders. These side effects disappear with the reduction of the dose and / or the administration of caffeine .

Posology

The usual oral dose in adults is 100mg (1tb) 1-3 times a day. This can be gradually increased, as needed, up to a total daily maximum of 0.9g (9tabs). In children it is recommended, according to age, 25-75 (1 / 4-1 / 2 tb) 1-3 times a day, not exceeding 0.3g (3tbs) the total daily dose.

The transition from Benzofen to another anticonvulsant therapy, or vice versa, should be done gradually, in order to avoid an increase in the frequency of attacks or a deterioration of the patient’s conditions.
