Balzak

A drug that contains two substances called olmesartan medoxomil and amlodipine (such as amlodipine besilate). Both substances help control high blood pressure

General

Olmesartan medoxomil belongs to a group of medicines called “angiotensin II receptor antagonists”, which lower blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels .

Amlodipine belongs to a group of medicines called “calcium channel blockers”. Amlodipine prevents calcium from penetrating the blood vessel wall, which prevents the blood vessels from narrowing, thereby also lowering blood pressure.

Mechanism of action

The action of both substances helps to stop the narrowing of the blood vessels , so that they relax and blood pressure decreases.

Use

Balzak is used to treat high blood pressure in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled on olmesartan medoxomil or amlodipine alone.

Before taking Balzak

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to olmesartan medoxomil, or to amlodipine, or to a special group of calcium channel blockers , called dihydropyridines, or to any of the other ingredients mentioned in section 6.
  • If you think you may be allergic, tell your doctor before taking Balzak.
  • If you are more than 3 months pregnant. It is best to avoid Balzak in early pregnancy.
  • If you have severe liver problems , such as jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), or have gallstones.
  • If you suffer from poor cardiac output due to a serious heart problem , or a heart attack, or if you have had a heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) in the last four weeks.
  • If you have pain or discomfort in the chest at rest or at night (unstable angina).

Take special care with Balzak

Before taking the tablets, tell your doctor if you have any of the following health problems:

  • Kidney problems or a kidney transplant.
  • Liver disease
  • Heart failure or problems with the heart valves or the heart muscle.
  • Severe vomiting, diarrhea, treatment with high doses of medicines that increase urine output (diuretics), or if you are taking a low-salt diet.
  • Elevated levels of potassium in the blood.
  • Problems with the adrenal glands (hormone-producing glands located above the kidneys).

As with any other medicine that lowers blood pressure, an excessive decrease in blood pressure in patients with impaired blood flow to the heart or brain can lead to a heart attack or stroke. This is why your doctor will carefully monitor your blood pressure. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or think you might be. The use of Balzak is not recommended in early pregnancy, and should not be taken if you are more than 3 months pregnant, as it may cause serious harm to your baby if taken at this stage.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or if you think you might be. Your doctor will advise you to stop taking Balzak before you become pregnant or as soon as you know you are pregnant, and will advise you to take another medicine instead of Balzak. The use of Balzak is not recommended in early pregnancy, and must not be taken when more than 3 months pregnant, as it may cause serious harm to your baby if used after the third month of pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking Balzak, please inform and see your doctor immediately.

Driving and using machines

During treatment for high blood pressure, you may feel sleepy or dizzy. If this happens, do not drive or use machines until the symptoms have disappeared. Consult your doctor.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Balzak can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. If these do occur, they are often mild and do not require stopping treatment. Allergic reactions with swelling of the face, mouth and / or larynx (vocal cords) may occur during treatment with Balzak, together with itching and skin rash. If this happens to you, stop taking Balzak and contact your doctor immediately. Balzak can cause a pronounced drop in blood pressure in susceptible patients. This can cause severe light-headedness or fainting. If this happens to you, stop taking Balzak, see your doctor immediately and lie flat.
