The axillary abscess is the swelling of one or more lymph nodes under the arm.

Causes
Lumps in the armpits can have many origins. Lymph nodes are like filters that can trap microorganisms or cancer tumor cells, when this happens, the lymph nodes increase in size and are easily palpable. Cysts and infections of the skin in the armpits can be caused by shaving or the use of antiperspirants, so it is recommended not to use deodorant. This happens most often in the teenage years when young people begin to shave. Subcutaneous abscesses can also produce large, painful lumps in the armpit.
Other causes of armpit bumps can include:
- AIDS
- Arm or breast infection
- Scratch disease Cat
- Cancers such as lymphoma or breast cancer
- Chickenpox
- Infectious mononucleosis
- Lipomas ( harmless fatty tumors )
- Normal breast tissue (breast tissue extends into the armpit area )
- Use of certain medications or vaccines
- Shingles ( herpes zoster )

A lump in a woman’s armpit should be examined by a doctor quickly, as it can be a sign of breast cancer .

The physical exam may include gentle pressure on the nodes with the tips of the fingers.
The tests depend on what is found during the physical exam, the doctor may ask questions:
When did you first notice the bump? Is it getting better, worse, or still the same? Are you breastfeeding? Have you noticed any factors that make the problem worse? What other symptoms are also present? Is the lump painful?
