Clitoris

The clitoris is a part of the female sexual organ, along with the vagina and hymen and is present in mammals. It is part of the erogenous zone, being considered the main source of female pleasure .

The subject of debates involving health issues and sociological analysis, the clitoris has become the object of studies related to the physiological explanation for pleasure and its possible relationship with reproductive function.

Where is the clitoris?

The clitoris is located in the upper part of the vagina , below the pubis and close to where the labia majora begins.

It is not easy to locate initially, as it is covered by the lips that protect it. To find it, it is necessary to separate the labia majora, apply light pressure towards the pubis so that it is exposed. The clitoris is protected by a tissue very similar to the foreskin of the penis.

Clitoris function

The function of the clitoris is to give sexual pleasure to the woman, being the only organ in the body to perform this role.

Having more than 8 thousand very sensitive nerve endings, twice the size of the penis, the clitoris has the power to intensify the female orgasm, allowing it to be reached more quickly when explored.

Anatomy of the clitoris

Like other organs of the human body, the clitoris can have different shapes and sizes, varying according to the woman’s body structure.

It has two parts, one on the outside, about 5 mm and the inside has about 4 cm.

When stimulated, the clitoris increases in size due to the blood circulation that is intensified in the area, as it consists of erectile tissue, just as it occurs in the penis . When in erection, the outer part of the clitoris can increase up to 2 cm.

Curiosities about the clitoris

  • The anatomy of the clitoris started to be studied with more emphasis in the late 90s, when Australian urologist Helen O’Connell dedicated herself to her study.
  • With the advancing age of the woman, the clitoris can become even more sensitive, increasing the possibility of sexual pleasure.
  • Some African tribes practice female genital mutilation, resulting in amputation of the clitoris. This is considered a “barbaric” act for violating human rights.
