Majority Coup

D. Pedro II, the second and last emperor of Brazil

The Majority Coup, also known as the Declaration of Majority, guaranteed D. Pedro II the position of emperor when he was 14 years old, in 1840.

Officially called the Declaration of Majority , it was the strategy of the liberal party to end the Regency Period (1831-1840), in which Brazil came to be governed by regencies, after the abdication of D. Pedro I (father of D. Pedro II) as emperor of the country.

In 23 of July of 1840 , Pedro de Alcantara Joao Carlos Leopoldo Salvador Bibiano Francisco Xavier de Paula Leocadio Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga Braganza and Bourbon (full name of D. Pedro II ) was declared of age.

The objective was to restore Brazil’s stability. The country was marked by the political and social instability of the First Kingdom (1822-1831) and which remained in the Regency Period (1831-1840).

In the First Kingdom, which began with the Independence of Brazil, D. Pedro I was a centralizing and authoritarian emperor. Conditions were precarious and the population’s discontent grew, until D. Pedro was forced to abdicate the throne.

His successor, D. Pedro II, was only 5 years old at the time of the abdication. For this reason, the country started to be governed by regents, who were represented by political groups (liberal and conservative) that defended different principles.

The power struggle resulted in a series of revolts, such as the Guerra dos Farrapos and Sabinada .

Many believed that the instability was caused especially due to the omission of a figure who ruled the country. Thus, liberals consolidated the idea that it was necessary to centralize again the power .

Supported by the liberal party, the project that anticipated adulthood advanced. The Clube da Maioridade was created , which was led by Antônio Carlos de Andrada e Silva. The strategy was to reduce the emperor’s majority so that D. Pedro II, who transmitted the idea of hope, could assume the leadership of Brazil.

It is important to mention that in the 1824 Constitution the emperor’s majority was granted at the age of 21.

D. Pedro II initiated the Second Empire of Brazil, whose period comprises the dates of July 23, 1840 to November 15, 1889, date of the Proclamation of the Republic .
