Origin

Badminton is a very modern version of a simpler, primitive game called Battledore , which was invented in China and was simply a form of fun in the early years.

The current game of badminton arose from the version that was played in India , where it was called Poona , the name of a town in the country where it was originally played. Some officers in the British Army saw the game in India and brought it to England around 1873 . There, the Duke of Beaufort became interested in the game. Since it was played regularly on his Gloucestershire country estate, known as Badminton, this name continued to be associated with the game. In its original form, badminton was a rather formal game played by wearing silk jackets, buttoned shoes, bowtie, and puffed trousers. And to play it you had to belong to a royal family.

Playing field

The total width of the track is 6.1 meters and, in singles, it is reduced to 5.18 meters. The total length is 13.4 meters. The service areas are delimited by a central line that divides the width of the runway, the short service, located 1.98 meters from the net, and by the outer lines on the side and the bottom. In doubles, the service area is also delimited by a line for long service, which is 0.7800356 meters from the baseline. Normally the lines that delimit the track are marked for both singles and doubles games, although the laws allow the marked track to be singles only. For doubles the court is the same as for singles, but the service area for doubles is shorter.

Badminton equipment

  • Rackets: Badminton rackets are lightweight, weighing from 75 to 140 grams, while beginner rackets range from 20 to 30 grams.
  • Strings: Badminton strings are between 0.65 and 0.73 millimeters. The tension of the rackets depends on the model but they range from 18 to 30 pounds.
  • Shuttlecock (batminton).

The game begins with a serve from the zone to the right to the diagonally opposite one and continues with the rally until one of the two players or pairs commits a foul. The game unfolds very quickly.

It is missing if:

  • the steering wheel touches the ground
  • the steering wheel does not pass the net
  • the steering wheel falls off the track or hits the roof
  • the steering wheel is hit twice

It is also necessary not to serve correctly, to feint, obstruct or disturb to get an advantage that is not very clean or if the shuttle reaches the person of any player, whether he is on or off the court.

Only the serving team or player can score. A foul by the team that has the service forces the service change but does not represent a point. A foul by the team receiving the service is a point for the other team.

Badminton strokes

Badminton offers a wide variety of basic strokes, requiring a high level of control from the players to execute them effectively. All strokes can be performed both forehand and backhand, except the long serve, which is only performed forehand. The player’s right side is the same side that he holds the racket with: for a right-handed player, the right, and for a left-handed, the left. The backhand is the opposite side with which the racket is held: for a right-handed the left area, and for a left-handed the right.

In each set, the players score as long as they win the point (rally) that they were contesting (this differs from the old system, in which the score was only scored when the point was scored with the service). The match consists of 3 sets, and is awarded to the player who manages to win two of them, without having to play the third if the first two have already been achieved.

At the beginning of each point, the serving player and the receiving player must stand on opposite diagonals of the service area (see Court Dimensions). The server must hit the shuttle below the waist so that it lands in the opponent’s service zone. In the event of a tie at 20 points, the set continues until a two-point difference is achieved (for example 24-22), up to a maximum of 30 (30-29 is the maximum possible score). On May 6, 2006, the IBF approved the current scoring system, after being tested since the beginning of the year in international competitions. All modalities are played in 3 sets of 21 points each.

Championships

After the World Cups and the Olympics , the most prestigious tournament is the All England , which has been held annually in Birmingham since 1994 . Until the establishment of the World Championship in 1977 , the English tournament was considered the most important in the world. There are also several team competitions, these are: the Thomas Cup , a male-only competition; Uber Cup , female; and the Sudirman Cup , a mixed competition. There is also great competition between children’s championships.
