Hyoscine Butyl Bromide

Description

Hyoscine Butylbromide (also known as Butylscopolamine Bromide or Buscopan ) is a quaternary ammonium compound derived from hyoscine, an alkaloid present in some plants of the genus Duboisia , such as Duboisia myoporoides .

Hyoscine butyl bromide is an antispasmodic. As the name suggests, these drugs contain and relieve spasms. It is used to treat discomfort and pain caused by abdominal spasms. It does not mask the pain, like painkillers , but acts on the cause of the pain: the muscle spasm itself.

Indications and dosage

Antisecretory (adjuvant) in the treatment of peptic ulcer

Oral or intramuscular administration

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 20 mg / dose up to 4 times a day.
  • Children 6 to 12 years: 6 to 12 years: 5 – 10 mg / dose up to 3 times a day,
  • Infants and children <6 years: 0.3-0.6 mg / kg / dose 3 or 4 times a day. Maximum daily dose: 1.5 mg / kg.
Adjuvant in irritable bowel syndrome and other functional gastrointestinal disorders

Oral administration:

  • Adults: 20 mg / dose up to 4 times a day.
Antispasmodic in the treatment of neurogenic colon and / or bladder

Oral administration:

  • Adults: 20 mg / dose up to 4 times a day.

Contraindications

Angle closure glaucoma , myasthenia gravis , paralytic ileus , pyloric stenosis , and prostatic hypertrophy . Porphyria .

Precautions

It should be used with caution in the elderly, children, patients with Down syndrome , in patients with hypertension , hyperthyroidism , heart failure , dyspepsia or heartburn , severe constipation , fever , ulcerative colitis (characterized by with symptoms such as frequent diarrhea mixed with blood ), and in subjects those who have difficulty or pain to urinate.

Interactions

Alcohol : enhances its sedative action. Disopyramide , MAOIs , tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines , clozapine , phenothiazines , amantadine , memantine : increases anticholinergic effects. Ketoconazole , levodopa: absorption is reduced. Haloperidol , domperidone , metoclopramide , sublingual nitrates: reduces their effect. Phenothiazines; reduces their plasma concentrations Parasympathomimetics: antagonizes their effects.

Posology

20 mg repeat 30 min later if necessary. It can be repeated more frequently in endoscopy. Maximum dose 100 mg / d. Not recommended in children.
